This Family Reserve Chenin Blanc 2013 was crafted from different soils (Granite, Oakleaf and Duplex) and each contributed to the best quality level of fruit and palate structure. These grapes were harvested from Bush vine vineyards and from three different wards in Stellenbosch. The canopy of the bush vines were suckered and tipped to ensure a cool micro climate around the grapes with no direct sun and without botrytis. On all three soil selections only the best portions of fruit were separately harvested and each then contributes to reach a final goal of pure varietal fruit, elegance and structure. These selections will be maintained in future to create a Kleine Zalze Icon Chenin Blanc style.

At Kleine Zalze, the Family Reserve Sauvignon Blanc blocks built up a history of consistency and blocks from Stellenbosch and Durbanville were selected. We recognize that each of the different regions contributed to our unique style and only the best selection of grapes within the best block in each region were used. These blocks are not more than 15 kilometers from the sea and were harvested during night and early morning to ensure optimal freshness and cultivar fruit.Stellenbosch and Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc grapes gave expressive structure and body with green fig and green pea flavours. By monitoring the water retention levels of the soils, ideal growing conditions occurred and excellent fruit with fresh characteristics were gained.

The scene is set for a meeting of two white grape varietals, each with its own personality and appeal. The floral sensuality of Roussanne is harnessed in the bracing grip of Grenache blanc. The result is a complete white wine with an intensely aromatic flavour leading to wild flowers and a collection of freshly gathered herbs. The wine is well integrated on the palate with a creamy texture leading to a subtle, herbal finish. Tasting Notes The grapes come from the Paarl area. They were crushed and chilled to maximise skin contact and to extract flavour, no pressed juice was added. The two varietals were fermented between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius. They were blended later and the acid was adjusted and stabilised.

Aged for 12 months in 300 litre barrels and a 4000 litre barrel to which French oak staves were added. Great care was taken to prevent exposure to oxygen as Mouverdre tends to los it's fresh appeal when exposed to oxygen. Tasting Notes The colour is vivid and deep, a bit black velvet hinting at the wine's elegant tannins and plush mouth-feel.

This resulted in a good wood integration. Tasting Notes The nose changes as the wine opens up in the glass, but you will always find notes of blackberry and plum, as well as earthy and mushroom aromas.
