Gemerk, Kräften, Kraxner, Turner, Satz: the five vineyards in Rust where our Weißburgunder vines grow. Their age ranges from 35 to 8 years old. It's exciting and challenging to be able to work with vines of such varying age. The older vines have something the young ones haven't yet obtained. Their roots haven't penetrated deeply. What the young ones do have is an irrepressible energy and power that invigorates. Our Weißburgunder is born of this concentrated power. An appropriate metaphor for life as well. And because Weißburgunder has throughout the years never disappointed me, even in vintages where the weather wasn't optimal, I call this wine my loyal friend. I apprenticed and learned the profession of winemaker with Schales Winery in Rheinhessen, Germany (www.schales.de), with Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery in Stellenbosch, South Africa (www.distell.co.za) and with my father Willi Schröck in Rust. From my father I learned a lot about wine, working in the vineyards and cellar, and inherited my deep love for Rust. He was a gifted storyteller. He would speak with such liveliness and detail that everyone listening had the feeling they were present when it all took place. His stories will always remain with me. With great admiration he would speak of Emperor Joseph II. Because of this, my book recommendation to accompany this wine: Joseph II by Hans Magenschab. Rust is fortunate to still have a village fisherman. You can always buy fresh Lake Neusiedl fish from the Augsten Fritz family. What goes better with Weißburgunder than grilled pike-perch with parsley potatoes. Harvested by hand. Temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, then matured for 6 to 8 months in large wooden casks. On January 28th, Eris Asimov of the New York Times tweeted: "Had a terrific 2010 Austrian pinot blanc the other day from Heidi Schröck. Not fruity, but luscious nonetheless." Thanks, Eric!
